My Path to Type Design
I started out in design back in 2001, specialising print design – brochures, branding, catalogues, and advertising – the kind of work you can actually hold. After several years with agencies in the city of Stirling, I went freelance in 2009 and kept doing what I loved. Somewhere along the way, I became fascinated by type: how the tiniest detail can change the whole feel of a word. That journey led to Thistle Type – an independent font foundry built on my love of print, passion for creative type, and my connection to Scotland.

The Spirit Behind the Type
As an independent type designer, I launched Thistle Type in 2025 to create high quality typefaces inspired by the spirit, landscape, and language of Scotland. Each typeface carries a name that nods to its roots, with designs ranging from bold san serifs to playful handwritten scripts. Every style is crafted to be versatile, multilingual, and easy to licence – whether you’re building a brand or telling a story, these fonts speak with a distinctly Scottish voice.
